"...All she had with her were the clothes on her back and she was quite
soaked. She told them that she had been walking along the Siuslaw
River from Mapleton for the past three days. She had come to
Mapleton as a mail-order bride, but the man she was to marry abused
her. Not knowing where to go, she just followed the river until she
arrived at the Gilbert place. The Gilberts asked her to stay with them
and gave her shelter and sanctuary. They later introduced her to
George Farman and the two were married. She apparently not only
made a fine wife for Mr. Farman, but she was known as one of the best
cooks in the Siuslaw Valley..."
