"All of the children were raised at the Inn. The washings were done at
the creek where a huge iron caldron hung on a tripod. Water for
washing was heated in this caldron and the clothes boiled in it. Later, a
hand-powered washing machine was purchased by old DB.
"When Mary was married, her wedding gift from the elder Cartwrights
was this same homemade washer and she was so angry that she went
down and pushed it into the creek and broke it. It had been her task
since she was big enough to do the washing in this back-breaking
machine. Grandpa Cartwright was furious!..."
